Category: Social and Human Development

Date: 2020
Client: UNICEF

This policy paper is a collaboration between Jordan’s Strategy Forum (JSF) and UNICEF Jordan. It analyses Jordan’s social protection responses to the COVID-19 crisis up to the end of August 2020. Based on a thorough desk review, the paper highlights the challenges of each response, and proposes policy recommendations for the way forward. It is divided into three sections. The first provides a quick overview of Jordan’s social protection sector and the developments that have occurred in the past few years. The second section studies the government measures taken as they relate to the three pillars of the National Social Protection Strategy (2019–2025) which are Social Assistance, Social Services and Social Insurance. The third and final section provides some lessons learned and recommendations for better shock responsiveness and an improved response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
